As prolific travelers to Mexico, the founders of Rent A Cell were frustrated with their inability to find reliable cell phone service there. Cell phone companies in the US claimed that their phones would work throughout Mexico but that just wasn't the case.
In addition, resort hotels in Mexico were charging outrageous rates to call the U.S. and Canada despite the in-room flyers that promised savings. The average three and four star resort hotels charge over $5.00 per minute even to travelers who use their own calling card from home. And placing calls was confusing since hotels require different dialing codes for local, cellular, long-distance and international calls.
Furthermore, while hotel staff could provide advice on where to dine or shop, information on more complex issues such as business, travel, medical or emergency services is more difficult to find.
